Your visual image will make an impact on the person who might be interviewing you for the position you are hoping to be hired to fill.  It is up to you to do your research about the company and the dress code expected of employees.  You can do some of that research by arriving in the morning or after work to see employees come to work or leave work.  By observing the different people and what they are wearing you can have a fair picture of what to wear to your first interview.  You will be a better possible fit for the person who is doing the interview.  That happens with their decision almost on a subconscious level so it would be to your advantage to capitalize on that as you go job hunting.

As you look through the fashion magazines today, you will notice many times the clothing is where you eye goes and the person wearing the clothing gets missed.  If you purchase the same items and wear them the way you saw them, you can also be missed.

When you are trying to go for an interview, being missed is not a good thing.  If you are already in a job, again being missed might mean you are passed over for promotions and/or someone else gets the credit for your work and ideas.

The thing that is the most important detail that you need to pay attention to is: are you seen in what you are wearing.  This applies to both men and women.  In business, you have to be seen to be remembered.  If you want to be the one to get the order, command attention from the group you are presenting to or be remembered your audience must be able to get to and stay focused on your face. Otherwise their mind is off on a dialog about something unrelated to what you are telling them.

We have all had that experience, the mind chatter kicks in and we completely missed the point the person was speaking to us about.  Then, you have to have the material repeated so you can try to listen the second time they go through their presentation.  Sometimes, the clothing or the accessories are so distracting that we never get the information.  A huge waste of time for them and for you.

Be sure you are dressed is such a way that the people meeting you can get to and stay focused on your face so you can be efficient in your connections and in getting your work done.

Many people are in the process of job hunting, being promoted and starting their own companies.  If you are interested in having a positive outcome from these activities, add these tips to your search and your dressing presentation when being interviewed.

Their are different types of categories for jobs in business and each category of job has a different way of dressing to help the customer of that industry feel comfortable in doing business with someone from that industry.

When interviewing, your clothing plays the top supporting role and your conduct, interpersonal skills and your ability to articulate intelligent and well thought out responses to questions play the next supporting roles.  Appropriate attire supports your image as a person who takes the interview process seriously and understands the nature of the industry in which you are trying to become employed.

Be aware that in some industries, customer contact and image presented to the customer is critical.  That is why some companies have dress codes and ask you to comply with their definition of what one of their employees looks like. When you are joining someone’s staff, it’s about their image first and your ability to comply with that  gives you the opportunity to be considered for a position or if you are already employeed there, to be promoted.  Many companies have image standards that have been developed over many years and at sometimes large expense so factor in if you are able to fit into that dress code and standard before you choose to interview with that company.

When interviewing, your attire should be appropriate, but not take center stage.  The way you select your clothing and accesories should always support your face as the place the eye of the person rests when they are speaking to you.  When the interviewer can focus on your face they can really hear what you are saying when you answer the questions they are covering about your skills.  Your opportunity to be seen and heard increases significantly when your face is not in competition with something you are wearing.

Because people so quickly make a decision about if you are credible or not and if they want to interact with you or not, your image and the way you present yourself, is critical to your success.  Remember, I said in an earlier post that you have 12 seconds for someone to make that decision about you and your credibility.

What are you communicating to others in that time frame?  I’m not sure about you, but, my mom, when I was a child, made sure that I understood that if someone looked funny, sounded funny or was acting funny that I was to stay away from them.  That becomes an unconscious safety issue  that no matter what age you are still applies to the way we interact with others.

When you meet someone, there is about a 12 second period of time while decisions are being made about who you are and whether you are who you say you are.  The saying “You never have a second chance to make a good first impression”  is true. That impression formed on your first meeting with another person, continues to influence your relationship with the person.  You can overcome decisions that are not favorable to you but it does take a great deal of time and energy.
